KAFANA BALKAN
KAFANA BALKAN
"Best Crazed Gypsy Brass Band Dance Party in SF: Yes, this occasional Kafana Balkan party is pretty much the only crazed Gypsy brass band dance party in town, but that doesn't make it any less special. Where else can you find hundreds of swarthy men with dangling moustaches and pork-pie hats dancing with slinky ladies in diaphanous dresses and hot-pink hair? (Okay, besides a Joanna Newsom show.) Kafana Balkan also offers live, horn-driven mayhem from the likes of Brass Menazeri and Edessa, as well as everything from Balkan hip-hop to crazy Gypsy funk spun by DJ Zeljko." --SF Weekly
Fanfare Zambaleta
Fanfare Zambaleta
Fanfare Zambaleta was incubated in the Zambaleta Music and Dance School in San Francisco and has since hit the streets as a full-fledged 11 piece juggernaut of a Balkan brass band playing exciting Romani, Serbian, Macedonian, and Greek Brass music with passion and dedication and featuring some of the Bay Area's most exciting young players and seasoned veterans.
Elizabeth Strong
Elizabeth Strong
Elizabeth Strong is a life long dancer, raised in the folk communities of California, where she was exposed to music and dance of the Balkans and Middle East from a young age. In addition to over a decade of study in the Bay Area, She has traveled and studied dance ethnology in Turkey and Egypt, the first student of Reyhan Tuzsuz in Istanbul, and student of Sahra Saeeda in Egyptian dance and culture.
Foxglove Sweethearts
Foxglove Sweethearts
Foxglove Sweethearts was created summer 2008 out of Jill's desire to work in a small group of top notch dancers, with possibilities for exploration outside the tribal fusion genre of bellydance. After more than a decade choreographing & visioning for Ultra Gypsy Dance Theatre Company, Jill wanted to explore an intimate collaborative experience with extremely well trained and versatile bellydancers, creating work heavily informed by traditional styles of bellydance while keeping her famous highly developed trademark sense of experimental twists in aesthetics & narrative approach to the form. Andrea, Sarah, Joie and Tessa are an obvious match with this artistic view and are each sumptuous stunningly beautiful performers & choreographers in their own right.
