B BOYS
B BOYS
New York’s B Boys (Andrew Kerr, Brendon Avalos, Britton Walker) find inspiration in the chaos that surrounds them: the aggressive attitude and sonic lawlessness of the city they live, work, and breathe in every day. Their raw, yet meticulous style is characterized by rhythmic complexity, commanding riffs, and introspective lyrics that are as playful and self-aware as they are cutting.

Across two acclaimed releases on Captured Tracks—2016’s No Worry No Mind EP and 2017’s debut full-length Dada—B Boys explore solitude and self-reflection through sharp, high-energy shouts and melodic mediations. Now, the sprightly sarcasm and acerbic commentary continues on the band’s highly anticipated sophomore LP, Dudu. Recorded by Gabe Wax (Deerhunter, Ought, Crumb) at Outlier Inn and mixed by Andy Chugg (Pill, Pop. 1280, Bambara) to be released on July 12, 2019.

Influenced by The Clash, Wire, and Talking Heads, Dudu finds B Boys picking up where they left off, pondering quotidien grievances while examining the bigger picture. On tracks like “Cognitive Dissonance” and “Automation,” subtle tensions meet agonizing pressure that softly build, then explode. “I Want,” featuring Pill’s Veronica Torres, is a bright, feel-good critique of capitalism and greed. There’s a lot of noise in the world, but what are we actually saying? On Dudu, B Boys take time to laugh, scream and chant their way through the absurdity of it all.
BODEGA
BODEGA
‘The best critique is self-critique’ is the mantra of Brooklyn art rock unit BODEGA. With wild minimalism and sharp wit, they revitalize the rock and roll vocabulary under the influence of post punk, hip-hop, kraut rock, and folk-derived narrative songwriting.

Still on the endless tour behind their debut LP ENDLESS SCROLL - Ben Hozie (conductor, vocals, guitar), Nikki Belfiglio (art director, vocals, samples, hi hat), Heather Elle (bass), and Madison Velding Vandam (lead guitar, producer) have recently recruited Tai Lee (formerly a performer/drummer in the show STOMP) as their new stand-up percussionist (original drummer Montana Simone has left to pursue her painting and sculpture). The art rock group has written and recorded a whole new batch of material w/ Tai (produced by Madison) that will be released soon (form yet TBD). Audiences can expect teases of this new material at the group’s shows this Winter and Spring.

On March 1 What’s Your Rupture records will release WITNESS SCROLL, a live album recorded May 2018 at the Poetry Club (Glasgow) and the Lexington (London). Raw and cathartic, the record showcases the spontaneous electricity of their live sets - including extended renditions of live staples ’Truth is Not Punishment’ and ‘Can’t Knock the Hustle.’ Also on the disc is the new track ‘No Vanguard Revival’ and a re-worked version of ‘Stain Glaze’, originally a song by Ben and Nikki’s old band BODEGA BAY.
Blues Lawyer
Blues Lawyer
Blues Lawyer is Rob I. Miller (Mall Walk), Elyse Schrock (The World), Nic Russo (Dick Stusso), and Alejandra Alcala (Preening).

Founded in Oakland last year at the edges of these more formalized projects, Blues Lawyer launched as an outlet for friends Rob and Elyse to air their romantic woes over a shared pop sensibility; originally the two had planned it as a comically brief experiment. The group started with the intention of only playing two shows but morphed into the primary outlet for their tragic and hilarious romantic encounters.

Rob and Elyse first met as co-workers at a record store in 2012 where they bonded over bands from the Flying Nun label such as the Clean and the Bats, which surface in the music the two now make together.

Recorded over two days by Andrew Oswald at Secret Bathroom in Oakland, Guess Work (Emotional Response vinyl, and Vacant Stare cassette version), combines punk-like pace and concision with a measure of pop sentiment and wit, eliciting comparisons to bands such as Television Personalities, the Vaselines, and Wire.
