San Francisco’s Heron Oblivion is the new group featuring Meg Baird (Espers), Noel Von Harmonson (Comets on Fire, Six Organs of Admittance, Sic Alps, The Lowdown), Ethan Miller (Comets on Fire, Howlin’ Rain, Feral Ohms), and Charlie Saufley (Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound).

Heron Oblivion’s origins date to 2013 in SF’s Bayview district, where its four members– fueled by a love of 60s/70s scuzz and commune jams, folk rock, noise, and P.S.F. Japanese underground—would get together for what Miller describes as “blistering, extended free jam sessions.” The four musicians realized that their initial chemistry (which was strong from the outset) was undeniable and it’s vision unified. Heron Oblivion was born.

Ultimately, Heron Oblivion fused song craft to its improvisational leanings. What materialized is a mesmeric compilation of English folk rock and earthy West Coast psychedelia spiked with feedback and explosive dissonant elements.

High Rise exploded onto Tokyo’s underground music scene with the roar and reckless abandon of a motorcycle accelerating headlong into a dead man’s curve. Born from the explosive chemistry of bassist/vocalist Asahito Nanjoand frenetic guitarist Munehiro Narita, the band blazed a wild new stream of psychedelic guitar music. Their second album High Rise II is a defining document of the band and unquestionably one of the greatest albums to emerge from 20th century underground Japan and beyond. With Nanjo’s distorted thunder bass and Narita’s wildly narrative lead guitar playing, High Rise II is a non-stop tour de force of improvised rock music. Combining elements of garage rock, punk and no wave, the band pushed all levels fully in-the-red and transcended the limits of rock and psychedelia to create a raw, unique expansion of the music.

This band went on and on as a four piece and then it went on and on as a six piece and then they kept changing the singer and continued to go on. Even to this day!
Headroom
Headroom
Headroom first took flight in 2016 as the solo outlet for New Haven musician Kryssi Battalene, née of regarded noise project Colorguard & guitarist for psychedelic voyagers, Mountain Movers. Headroom sprung forth from the fertile and underrated New Haven scene - a musical patchwork of punk, hardcore, noise & experimental music all sharing the same stages & DIY spots and creating a musical identity all their own.

Battalene's talent flourished & soon enough, her signature style of guitar was infiltrating & influencing a new crop of New Haven musicians; part Twisted Village / PSF Records-influenced white noise maelstrom, part nuanced, beautiful six-stringed draperies. Battalene’s talents have graced recordings & stages with Estrogen Highs, Medication, Secret Treaties & Stefan Christiansen & Friends, but “Head In the Clouds” marks the first long-player for this, her current solo project (after a well regarded cassette EP on the C/Site imprint).

Across the album’s alternatingly harsh & beautiful five tracks, Battalene masterfully coaxes her guitar into a myriad of tastes and textures, from lumbering opener “How To Grow Evil Flowers”s psychedelic squall to more placid tracks like “Millers Pond” or “Flower of Light”, where she tempers her feedback to guide the tunes to new horizons. The title track’s pulsing guitar/synth interplay offers an eight minute respite before swan diving back into a fog of feedback. “Head In the Clouds” could be seen as the companion piece to Mountain Movers’ ‘s/t’ 2017 album, but with Battalene at the helm, Headroom eschews that band’s (ever so slightly) more traditional take in favor of a dizzyingly creative experimentalism. “Head In the Clouds” is an album meant to get lost in.
